Why the Chengdu Giant Panda Base belongs on a first trip
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is one of the easiest places for international visitors to build a focused giant-panda experience into a Chengdu itinerary. The Base is in Chenghua District, around 10 km from Tianfu Square, and combines giant panda conservation, research, public education and visitor areas in a large landscaped site.
For a first visit, the main decision is not whether you can “see everything.” The site is much larger than many travellers expect, so a better plan is to choose a morning entry, prioritise the panda areas you care about most, and leave enough time for walking, queues and spontaneous stops.
When should you visit?
For most travellers, a morning entry is the simplest choice. It gives you a longer usable window and keeps the rest of the day flexible. It can also be more comfortable in warmer months. Animal activity is never guaranteed, so think of an early start as a planning advantage rather than a promise of a particular panda behaviour.
As of September 2026, the official schedule is seasonal: from March to October, morning entry begins at 07:30 and park clearance begins at 18:00; from November to February, entry begins at 08:00 and park clearance begins at 17:30. Tickets and reservations for foreign visitors
The Panda Base currently uses real-name reservations for most visitors, and tickets can be reserved online up to 14 days ahead. The standard adult ticket is CNY 55. Bring the original valid ID document used for your booking when you enter.
International visitors without a Chinese mobile number have a practical option: the Base’s official visitor information specifically points foreign visitors to Trip.com. An on-site cash-and-card service window may also sell tickets when inventory remains, but relying on same-day availability is not the best choice during busy periods.
How to get there from central Chengdu
Public transport is straightforward. For the South Gate, take Metro Line 3 to Panda Avenue Station and transfer to official Shuttle 408. For the West Gate, take Line 3 to Junqu General Hospital Station and transfer to Shuttle 409. The Base also lists direct scenic shuttle services from central visitor areas such as Chunxi Road and Kuanzhai Alley.
A taxi or ride-hailing car is useful when you want an early start or door-to-door convenience. The Base’s current reference estimate from Chunxi Road is about CNY 40 and roughly 25–35 minutes, although actual time and fare depend on traffic.
How much time should you allow?
Plan around three to four hours for a comfortable first visit. That is enough time to prioritise giant pandas without turning the experience into a race. If you want to spend more time at the museum, Panda Tower, red panda areas or the newer zones, give yourself longer.
The official sightseeing bus can reduce walking across the expanded site. It currently costs CNY 30 per person and operates between the South and West Gate routes with multiple stops inside the Base.
Panda Base or Panda Valley?
Do not confuse the main Chengdu Panda Base with Panda Valley in Dujiangyan. The main Base is the better fit for a classic first-time Chengdu itinerary because it is closer to the city and easier to combine with urban sightseeing. Panda Valley is a separate affiliated field research centre near Dujiangyan and works better as part of a western Sichuan day route.
